Heavy Rains In Angola Boost Lake Kariba Water Levels

Load shedding in Zimbabwe and Zambia is expected to ease following recent torrential downpours in Angola.

Bloomberg reports that the floodwaters are cascading along the Zambezi River, with the torrent of water set to tumble over the Victoria Falls before arriving in Lake Kariba.

Lake Kariba is the source of a steady supply of hydropower for the two nations but the reservoir is nearly empty after years of drought and overuse.

According to data from the Zambezi River Authority, jointly run by Zimbabwe and Zambian governments, water flows near Zambia’s border with Angola in February peaked at levels last seen in 1978.

The rainwater has now filled vast floodplains in western Zambia and is flowing toward Kariba.
