“Parties That Fail To Meet The 50-50 Gender Parity Should Be Barred From 2023 Elections”

Women Coalition of Zimbabwe Gweru chapter has advocated for the disqualification of political parties that fail to meet the 50-50 gender parity in the selection of candidates in the 2023 general elections.

Speaking at the chapter’s meeting in Gweru recently, outgoing vice-chairperson Florence Guzha says women should advocate for a statutory instrument to make it mandatory to respect the 50-50 gender parity. She said:

As women, we should advocate for a law that makes it mandatory for political parties to meet the 50-50 gender parity in the selection of candidates.

Should parties fail to meet such a requirement in the 2023 elections, they should not be allowed to participate in the plebiscite.

Statistics show that few women are participating in politics due to a number of issues including lack of funding.

Less participation by women in politics has slowed down the promotion of gender equality policies as women occupying decision-making positions are few compared to their male counterparts.

  1. that is killing the essence of democracy politics participation is voluntary.women should challenge for it because they will be voted for not appointed.they are given all what it takes to challenge for positions.they should come on merit we do not want a scenario were people can just get leadership roles because of gender.do the women coalition suggest that all parties would field women candidates in one constituency that there should be an obvious woman winner.or they mean all parties should agree that no man should contest against a woman.if it is real democracy there should be dectatory directive. As i understand all plat forms of equality has been put in place for everyone therefore women should not demand given in a silver platter. In development we need competence not attendance
