Govt Urges Teachers To Have Extra Lessons To Help Learners Who Are Lagging Behind

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Tumisang Thabela has urged teachers to arrange extra lessons to help learners who are lagging behind.

Thabela however cautioned teachers about charging a fee when conducting those lessons saying it is a punishable offence. She said:

I am a teacher, I used to hold extra lessons in the evening for boarding learners and even during the weekends, but it was just to catch up, it had nothing to do with money…

As government, we would want such arrangements. However, there should be no charge for such extra-lessons.

Holding extra lessons at a cost is not allowed and those found doing the opposite will be disciplined.

Her remarks come amidd reports that some teachers are conducting extra lessons for a fee between US$5 and US$10 per subject to augment their “paltry” salaries.

Since last year, some teachers have been on go-slow arguing that they are incapacitated to effectively execute their duties and responsibilities as the soaring inflation has eroded their salaries.
