MUCKRAKER a pseudonym column in Zimbabwe Independent which is meant as a humourous look at local politics has said there are some positives which the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) brought with it.
The remarks are made after president Emmerson Mnangagwa has banned government officials from travelling abroad, particularly out of Africa as the virus spreads across the world.
Zimbabwe’s former and current government officials have for long been criticised for spending the ‘taxpayers’ money” while the nation languishes in poverty, yet, they continued travelling under the guise of advancing national interests. MUCKRAKER observes:
Yet, it has taken the coronavirus to finally keep our leaders at home. Well, if it takes a dangerous disease to keep our rulers from their addiction to foreign travel, then long may this plague continue. As they say on ZBC, people from all walks of life have hailed the coronavirus for saving the country money.
Former first lady, Grace Mugabe and President Mnangagwa top the list of individuals who have been criticised for travelling ‘too much’ and “unnecessarily”.
The trips are alleged to have consumed millions of dollars that could have been used on other essentials like reviving the health sector.
