FULL TEXT: EFF Accuses ZANU PF Of Putting Zim On Autopilot While Coronavirus Looms

As of today, the Coronavirus has claimed over 4000 lives worldwide. Despite best efforts by world governments and international organisations to prevent this from becoming a catastrophic pandemic, the terrifying virus is spreading almost effortlessly worldwide.

In recent days we have seen world leaders taking steps to address people’s fears over this and announce how their governments are responding to the unfolding disaster.

Most are moving from a policy of containment to actively spray all public places to prevent the increase in infections.

EFF Zimbabwe, therefore, note with great concern that to date we continue with deafening silence on the part of the Zimbabwe Government on what measures are in place to react to this dangerous situation.

This silence is an indictment again to this incompetent administration that is putting the welfare of the nations at great risk. So far there has been no substantive ministerial statement on this.

Our nation is kept in the dark about what is happening. This is a time where leadership is needed. So far it feels like the nation is on autopilot and headed towards disaster very fast.

EFF Zimbabwe is concerned too that the main opposition party-MDCA is silent on the issue and failing to hold the government to account on this most important issue confronting humanity today.

However, it is not surprising that Zanu-PF and MDC are silent on this impending catastrophe because between them, they have destroyed all the health infrastructure needed to respond to the Coronavirus.

The MDC has destroyed the ability and capacity of local authorities they have run for the past twenty years through corruption and incompetence. Zanu PF has failed to govern at the national level while MDCA has in the last 20 years failed to govern at the local level. This means MDCA is a local failure while Zanu PF is a national failure.

EFF Zimbabwe is urgently calling on the parliamentary select committee on health to summon Obadiah Moyo, Minister of Health and Child Welfare to parliament without further to tell the nation what plans have been put in place to combat the coronavirus once it takes hold in Africa as predicted.

We also need to hear from the President Mnangagwa as to what his instructions are to his ministers to address the panic and fear among our people.

We are even more concerned because our health infrastructure has collapsed putting millions of lives at risk. We are extremely concerned that the government appears to abdicate its duty to protect its citizens.

This is evident by the lack of urgency from the government when clearly the country and world is facing a potential catastrophic pandemic.

As EFF Zimbabwe we are very clear that we are demanding that the government starts a campaign to educate our people about how to take health measures to reduce the risk of catching and spreading the virus. This national campaign must start now.
