"Only 8 African Countries Ready To Prevent And Or Contain Coronavirus," WHO Africa

The Wolrd Health Organisation (WHO) Africa has reported that only eight African countries are “adequately” prepared to avoid and or contain the novel coronavirus.

Despite assurances by Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health (MoH) that the country is ready, WHO Africa’s recent survey in the region ranked Zimbabwe’s case management ability as “limited” which means the country can neither avoid nor contain the virus in the event that it spreads to Zimbabwe.

Sixteen other countries fall within the “limited” category, including Nigeria and Ghana. So far, three African countries, Algeria, Nigeria and Egypt are the only African countries were cases of the virus were recorded. In a statement, Who Africa noted:

Given the fragility of many member states’ health systems, and the potential for a large number of COVID-19 cases to emerge if infections are not addressed, effective treatment is crucial, and preparedness is a key part of this.

The report by WHO Africa justifies the fears and projections of philanthropist and founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates who said that the virus had the potential to kill more than ten million people were it to spread to Africa due to the state of health systems on the continent.
