Algeria Records First Coronavirus Case, It's The Second African Country

Algeria has recorded its first coronavirus case (covid-19) after an Italian man who arrived in the country on the 17th of February tested positive to the novel virus.

The case has according to authorities been quarantined. The development was announced by Algeria’s health minister, and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said on Twitter that he had ordered medical authorities to take maximum precautions.

Northern Italy which has been the centre of an outbreak of the coronavirus with more than 280 cases and 11 deaths is home to many Algerians and Italy’s Milan-based energy company, Eni, is also involved in projects in Algeria.

There fears that the development could cause pandemonium in Algeria which is still marred by political instability characterised by mass street protests that are occurring at least twice a week.

The case becomes the second to be recorded after Egypt recently announced that a case had tested positive to the virus.
