ZACC Investigates GMB Illicit Deals

Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) chairperson Justice Matanda-Moyo told Zim Morning Post that the anti-graft body has received a report on alleged corruption involving government-subsidised maize at the Grain Marketing Board (GMB). She said:

Yes, we received a report of the issue, and we are seized with it.

While giving oral evidence before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Lands, Agriculture and Resettlement on Tuesday, some millers claimed to have proof of underhand dealings at GMB. Wayne Moss of Mr Brands said:

The abuse is rife. It is so serious that it has to be dealt with. There is abuse within GMB which you are already dealing with on who gets what allocation.

People are using roller meal maize to process other commodities. There is maize going to the DRC.

In November last year, the government introduced the subsidy on roller meal after the prices had gone through the roof because of an acute shortage of maize.

The price for a 10kg bag of roller meal was initially set at $50 but was increased to $70 last week.
