Commuter Omnibus fares have been hiked with owners citing increased fuel prices as the reason behind the latest hike.
The Sunday News reports that some commuter omnibus operators in Bulawayo have hiked fares from $5 to $7 per trip arguing that fuel prices had been increased on the black market.
The publication further reports that some commuters spent several hours waiting for the heavily subsidised ZUPCO buses which charge $1 per trip.
Meanwhile, Tshova-Mubaiwa cooperative highlighted that they had not increased their fares and if and when they do, they will notify stakeholders through official letters. The cooperative’s chairperson Mr Atlas Moyo said:
This is the bad behaviour of these boys, they are doing what they want. If you ask the owners of the kombis, they might not be getting money equivalent to $7 because when the drivers cash in, they say they are still charging $5.
The public transport sector in the country is collapsed and the government is reintroducing ZUPCO buses to revive it. Fares are going up when members of the public are crying over a number of socio-economic issues including the soaring inflation and scarcity of mealie-meal.
