Harare To Impose Financial Penalties On Litterbugs

Harare City Council is set to impose heavy fines on individuals caught littering and businesses with dirty premises.

An individual will pay a ZWL$100 fine while businesses with dirty premises will pay ZWL$700.

Harare City Council spokesperson Michael Chideme told ZTN News that the City will work in collaboration with the Environmental Management Agency and police: Said Chideme:

The operation will be sustained, starting from Monday; and the council is working with the Environmental Management Agency and the Zimbabwe Republic Police to fine all litterbugs.

Anyone found disposing litter where they are not supposed to will be ticketed.

Most parts of Harare’s CBD and residential areas have become an eyesore, with heaps of stinking rubbish uncollected for months.

Harare experiences intermittent outbreaks of cholera and typhoid, especially during the rainy season.
