Advocate Fadzayi Mahere who is the Secretary for Education in the opposition MDC led by advocate Nelson Chamisa has posted on Twitter saying that they would overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa before 2023.
Her post comes a few days after the acquittal of the party’s vice-chairperson, Job Sikhala on subversion charges which emanated from remarks similar to those in Mahere’s post which he made at a rally last year. Posting on Twitter, Mahere said:
We are going to take the fight to the doorstep of @. We’re going to overthrow him before 2023. That’s not a joke.
The post was accompanied by a picture of Sikhala making the rationale behind the message ambiguous as it could mean that she is in solidarity with him or that the party is indeed planning to dislodge Mnangagwa from power before 2023.
When Sikhala made the remarks last year, however, the party was quick to classify the sentiments as ‘personal views’ which did not necessarily reflect the party’s position.
A huge number of members of the MDC and human rights defenders were last year arrested accused of intending to subvert a constitutionally established government.
