Domestic Workers Set For Another Pay Rise

Deputy Labour Minister Lovemore Matuke said that domestic workers earn $500 per month, with the figure set to be improved soon.

Matuke made the remarks last week while responding to a question from MDC Senator Theresa Makone during a question and answer session in the Senate. Said Matuke:

The truth is that domestic workers earn $500 and government is in the process of reviewing it with a view to improve on that. The Gazette being referred to was actually delayed so it has been overtaken by events.

Makone raised the issue following the promulgation of Statutory Instrument 37 of 2020 published in the Government Gazette a fortnight ago.

It set the minimum wage for a gardener at $160 per month, while for a cook or housekeeper (informally referred to as a maid) was set at $168.48.
