Crunch Time For Job Sikhala

Masvingo High Court judge Justice Garainesu Mawadze is set to hand down his ruling on whether or not MDC vice-chairperson Job Sikhala will stand trial for treason this Friday.

Justice Mawadze reserved ruling on Sikhala’s application for an exception to the charge earlier this month.

The combative Zengeza West legislator, who is out on $5 000 bail, allegedly told a party rally in Bikita last year that they will “overthrow President Mnangagwa before 2023”.

Sikhala is being represented by human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa who tod the court that her client’s remarks did not call for the unconstitutional removal of the President and neither did he call for the unlawful removal of the government.

If Justice Mawadze dismisses Sikhala’s application, the opposition politician will have to stand trial.

Sikhala faces at least 20 years in jail without the option of a fine if convicted.
