Weather Forecast: Met Department Warns Of Heavy Rains And Stormy Weather

The Meteorological Services Department has issued a statement informing members of the public that heavy rains which can result in natural hazards including flash floods were expected to fall starting this Thursday.

In a statement, the department urged members of the public to take precautionary measures to avoid loss of life. The statement read in part:

Starting today, most areas in the country are expected to have scattered thunderstorms. Rainfall is likely to intensify from tomorrow to Wednesday, February 12. However, the spatial distribution may be variable across the country.

The bulk of the rainfall should be realised in areas along and to the north of the main watershed.

Never take shelter in isolated sheds or under trees.

The department also projected that some areas shall receive more than 50mm in 24hours and there is a high likelihood of violent storms in some places.

Members of the public were advised against trying to cross flooded rivers, parking cars under trees adding that they should stay indoors during thunderstorms.
