Kariba Dam Water Approaching Unusable Storage Levels - Zambezi River Authority
The Zambezi River Authority has reported that water levels have rapidly fallen at Kariba Dam, a development that will likely see Zimbabwe’s power crisis escalating.
The authority reports that water level in the Kariba Dam was at 476,75 metres translating to 8,64 per cent of the dam capacity on Thursday last week.
This translates to just 1,25 metres above the minimum 475,50m recommended for power generation. Zimbabwe and Zambia use Kariba Dam for their hydropower generation and the decrease in water levels has seen the two countries decreasing power generation.
In an update on the water levels, Zambezi River Authority said:
The Kariba Lake is designed to operate between levels 475,50m and 488,50m (with 0,70m freeboard) for hydro-power generation. The lake level has been decreasing due to reduced rainfall activities around and on the lake to close the period under review at 476,75m (8,64 per cent usable storage) on 30 January 2020. Last year on the same date, the lake level was 481,73m (44,83 per cent usable storage).

There were high hopes that water levels will improve during this rainy season and Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube highlighted the importance of improved water levels to sectors including agriculture and energy which also have a direct trickle down effect on other sectors.
