Chamisa who was born at Silveira Mission Hospital in Bikita, Masvingo province, on February 2, 1978, to Alice and Sylvanus Chamisa. has been involved in politics for half his life, having served as the secretary-general of the Zimbabwe National Students’ Union between 1999 and 2001.

He enrolled at Harare Polytechnic College in 1998 for a National Diploma in Marketing Management and his eloquence saw him elected as Harare Polytechnic College Students’ Representative Council president in the same year.

Probably a turning point in Chamisa’s political career could be1999 when he was expelled from Harare Polytechnic. He had been barred from speaking at the graduation ceremony but he did so regardless.

Chamisa forcibly grabbed the microphone from the guest of honour, then Higher Education Minister, Dr Ignatius Chombo, and addressed the gathering in the full glare of Central Intelligence Organisation agents and police officers at the event.

He was arrested and was taken into a Santana vehicle prompting graduating students to leave their seats, surround the vehicle threatening to set it ablaze.

Chamisa was released a few minutes later and violent clashes between the students and the police followed resulting in Chamisa’s expulsion. He later challenged successfully in the high court.

Today, he is the leader of the biggest opposition party, MDC Alliance, the position he assumed in 2018 following the death of party founding member, Morgan Tsvangirai.

He holds a Political Science Degree and a Law Degree, both attained with the University of Zimbabwe.

Happy Birthday From Pindula!
