Proposed Constitutional Amendments Get The Nod From POLAD
The proposed constitutional amendments that were recently gazetted by the government have received an endorsement from members of the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) forum.
POLAD members had previously raised concern over the government’s decision to gazette the amendments without POAD members looking into them first.
The government then presented the proposed amendments to the forum which then established subcommittees tasked to look into the amendments.
Commenting on the proposed removal of the Presidential running mate clause, Prof Lovemore Madhuku who chairs Polad’s subcommittee on governance and legislative reforms said that the clause was dangerous to a sitting president. He said:
There were people who were feeling that clause is a dangerous clause as a person who is a running mate and waiting to become President may actually harm the existing President. It creates instability, because if you know that I’m going to be the next President and it’s guaranteed by the Constitution it tends to create problems.

Meanwhile, some legal experts including Alex Magaisa, a law lecturer in the United Kingdom said that the proposed amendments were a blow to democracy and independence of the judiciary.
The opposition MDC has also called upon members of the public to join the party in opposing the adoption of the proposed amendments.
