Seven Machete Suppliers Remanded In Custody

Seven Harare-based machete makers who were arrested last week at Siyaso in Mbare have been remanded in prison. The development was confirmed to the Herald by police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

The development comes as the government has launched a blitz that is intended to curb machete gangs who have been terrorising miners and members of the public.

A few weeks ago, police prohibited, for three months, the carrying of weapons such as machetes, knives, catapults, swords and knobkerries in the Midlands province “to restore sanity”.

Analysts say that the machete gangs are destabilising the mining sector and as a result, the country is losing a lot in revenue and their activities are also scaring away potential investorrs.
