A Harare maid, Memory Zvinzveku, has appeared before Harare Magistrates’ Court facing homicide charges after she allegedly strangled her employer’s child.
The 19-year-old maid is said to have strangled the now deceased boy on 22 January and laid him to bed afterwards before calling a neighbour saying the boy was not waking up.
It is reported that Zvinzveku took the boy from Tafara 1 Primary school and went home with him. The boy reportedly changed clothes and went to play with friends where Zvinzveku later followed and asked for him.
At home, the accused allegedly strangled the boy, changed his clothes and put him on the bed. She called a neighbour, Fadzanai Kakunguwo who found the boy motionless.
Kakunguwo also observed that the now deceased boy had some scratches on the neck. Reports also suggest that the white t-shirt which the boy was wearing when he was playing with his friends was discovered in a washing basket with bloodstains all over.
A postmortem concluded that strangulation was the cause of death.
The accused was denied bail by magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa who referred her to the High Court for bail application.
