Zimbabwe Schools Deficit Increases

Despite operating schools’number doubling since 1980, Zimbabwe is still in need of over 3000 schools The Herald reports.

This was revealed by Professor Amon Murwira who said they will try and build more schools this year but the disparity is just too big to be filled in the short run:

We have a deficit of about 3 000 schools, both primary and secondary across the country. For 2020, we are looking at the construction of between 100 and 200 schools. We know that this is below the expected numbers, but we are seized with the matter since education is a basic human right.

The schools deficit has been widened by the increased number of learners who according to the publication grow annually further widening the teacher-student ratio. Existing structures are failing to cope and some students are learning in makeshift classes.
