Police officers who laid siege on the opposition MDC’s headquarters, the Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House on Friday afternoon did not find any machetes, the party’s lawyer Jeremiah Bamu told reporters.
Truckloads of anti-riot police officers led by one Superintendent Dzitiro descended on the MDC offices today and cordoned off the area around Nelson Mandela Avenue where the offices are situated.
Ten officers were allowed to enter the building to search “machetes and subversive material” in terms of a warrant they obtained from a magistrate.
Meanwhile, in a statement released earlier during the day, MDC Deputy National Spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka said the search was a witch-hunt by the government meant to portray the party as a rogue organisation to crack down on its legitimate programmes.
