EMA Criticised For Proposing To Ban Disposable Diapers

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has drawn the ire of citizens for advocating for the ban of disposable diapers which it says are a serious hazard to the environment.

Responding to a story posted on The Herald’s Facebook page, one Riwilo Masulani urged EMA to enforce appropriate waste management techniques instead of banning disposable diapers. He wrote:

Environmental Management [Authority] should manage the environment for the benefit of people by enforcing appropriate waste management techniques, rather than banning products that form part of people’s livelihoods and part of business income.

In this day and age of sustainability where people are conserving water, who would advocate the use of washable napkins?

Rather than banning disposable nappies, EMA should be lobbying Government to legislate for proper household waste management facilities by the ratepayer-funded urban councils.

EMA Bulawayo provincial manager, Decent Ndlovu, was recently quoted as saying that the authority has been assessing the impact of disposable diapers since they were introduced and believes it’s now high time they are banned.
