Thomas Mukanya Mapfumo Loses Entire Unreleased 15 Track Album

Exiled prominent Zimbabwean musician, Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo has lost his entire album which was due to be released before Christmas.

The Chimurenga music legend was told by Tracktown Studios owned by Fernando Bispo that their computer hard drive which contained the music had burnt and that they only managed to recover two tracks out of 15.

The 74-year-old Mapfumo lamented over the loss saying he has been forced to change the date of release. Speaking to Nehanda Radio, he said:

The studio is saying we have to re-record the album but this comes with added expenses. We have to raise over USD$1600 to rehire the session musicians we used.

Many Zimbabweans are fond of Mukanya’s music and the latest development brings sadness to them.

Mapfumo, one of the country’s living music legends, is known for not mincing his words, a personality that forced him into exile after he clashed with Robert Mugabe’s regime.
