"Stop The Use Of The Word Mashurugwi Referring To Criminals," Home Affairs Minister

Home Affairs Minister, Kazembe Kazembe has urged members of the media to desist from labelling machete gangs as Mashurugwi saying that the tag has tribal connotations and can create tribal tensions. He said:

People must stop the use of the word Mashurugwi referring to criminals. These are criminals and have nothing to do with Shurugwi. This practice promotes unnecessary divisions. Let us be responsible citizens. We are a peace-loving nation.

His remarks come when machete gangs who were initially believed to be from Shurugwi in the Midlands Province have for several months now been terrorising miners and members of the public in gold mining towns such as Kwekwe.

ZBC News reports that information on the arrested culprits suggests that they come from different parts of the country and none of them come from Shurugwi.
