"Machete Gangs Issue Expose Divisions In The Security Sector," Temba Mliswa

Norton legislator (independent), Temba Mliswa who is a relative of President Emerson Mnangagwa has claimed that there are divisions within Zimbabwe’s security sector and the machete gangs issue exposes that division.

His remarks are a strong redolent of sentiments expressed by some analysts who believe that machete gangs who are locally known as Mashurugwi and or Al Shabab are strongly connected to prominent people in the country. Mliswa posted on Twitter and said:

The ongoing problem of machete gangs is a direct result and beneficiary of the schisms which are still prevalent in the country’s security system since the November 2017 government change.

Following November 2017 there was a division which segmented security sector with the police and CIO on one side and the army on the other side. This is still ongoing with each side suspecting the other of duplicating its job.

Today there is rampant infiltration of the mining sector by these security forces. They use their power to defend and protect those on their side when they are arrested. The security chiefs call when their mining allies are arrested demanding their release.

This is the reason why progress has been minimal in stemming the tide of machete gangs as all the security forces have been seemingly reluctant to come in until the killing of the police officer, Wonder Hokoyo.
