About 89 under-age schoolgirls have reportedly dropped out of school between January and September after they fell pregnant.
This was revealed by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in Makoni in a report titled “Dropouts due to pregnancy – 2019”.
The report also indicated that about eight (8) primary school kids dropped out due to pregnancy. It also revealed that 30 out of 31 affected schools were rurally located.
The youngest girl to fall pregnant was 13 years old while out of the 89, only two are above 18.
The report comes when there is still debate on whether pregnant students should be allowed in schools or not.
It raises serious concerns about the health of minors as they are at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.
