US Ambassador To Zambia Withdrawn Over Gay Rights Dust-Up

In a sudden turn of events, a gay row spiralled out of control and became a diplomatic issue in Zambia after the US Ambassador to Zambia critisized the Zambian authorities for jailing a gay couple a dustup that resulted in the US withdrawing its ambassador to Zambia.

According to Bloomberg:

The State Department is “dismayed” with Zambia for having effectively declared Daniel Foote a persona non grata, it said in an emailed statement. The U.S. government strongly opposes abuses against sexual minorities, it said, without confirming Foote’s withdrawall

The dispute started after Foote said he was “horrified” after a Zambian court last month sentenced two men to 15 years imprisonment for having consensual sex while corrupt officials steal millions in public funds and walk free. Zambian President Edgar Lungu responded by saying he wanted Foote to leave the country.

The US according to the New York times is not keen to replace the ambassador. Zambia receives half a billion dollars in aid from the US annually.
