A strike by air traffic controllers (ATCs) at Zimbabwe’s main three airports, in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls on Friday morning, has resulted in the grounding of flights.
The ATCs went on strike over poor pay and safety concerns, with reports suggesting that they want to be paid in US dollars.
At the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, passengers on a 7.20 AM FastJet out of Bulawayo to Johannesburg were told to disembark after the plane failed to get clearance for take-off.
At around 9 AM, two planes were stranded on the runway at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare – one operated by FastJet and another by South African Airways.
An airport official in Harare who spoke to ZimLive on condition of anonymity revealed that Air Force of Zimbabwe air traffic controllers had been dispatched to the control tower. However, striking ATCs barricaded themselves inside.
