Hefty Fines For Multi Tier Pricing And "Other" Pricing Models

The President signed the consumer bill into law last week, and the bill is aimed at protecting consumers against pricing madness, the Sunday Mail reports.

The new law, which was published in a govt gazette on 10 December 2019, purports that unfair pricing practices will attract a Level 5 fine ($600) or imprisonment for a period not exceeding three months, or both according to the publication. Unfair pricing practices include 3 tier pricing, charge unfair prices or display unpriced goods.

The Bill also gave an automatic warrant to some goods as it read in part:

Within six months after the delivery of any goods to a consumer, the consumer may return the goods to the supplier, without penalty and at the supplier’s risk and expense, if the goods fail to satisfy the requirements and standards

It is still not clear how this will be implemented. We will update this article as new details emerge.
