Time Now For ED, Chamisa To Have "Kenyan Handshake" - Analyst

President Emmerson Mnangagwa will have to abandon the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) and engage MDC leader Chamisa, a political analyst has said.

University of Zimbabwe political science lecturer Eldred Masunungure on Thursday told the Daily News that pressure has now forced both Mnangagwa and Chamisa to compromise on the methodology to be used for national dialogue. He said:

Soon, Mnangagwa will have to abandon his POLAD (Political Actors Dialogue), which is a mere gathering of like-minded individuals that is not designed to achieve anything.

There appears to be fatigue on both ends, with the MDC probably realising that playing spoiler has not won them anything … while on the other hand, ED cannot continue on the path of repression which is damaging his reputation internationally.

Reports suggest that Chamisa has relinquished his demand to have an external mediator to facilitate the envisaged dialogue with Mnangagwa.

On Thursday, former MDC secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora revealed that the party leadership now want a “Kenyan Handshake” with ZANU PF, an apparent reference to dialogue that ended political disputes between Kenya’s Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta.
