'Lake Kariba Losing 3 Times The Amount Of Water Flowing Into It'

Water levels in Lake Kariba, the world’s largest man-made freshwater reservoir, fell to their lowest since 1996.

According to the Zambezi River Authority, Lake Kariba’s water levels fell to 10% of usable storage, making it the least since 1996 and worse than the 11% recorded during a drought in 2016.

Kariba Hydropower Plant supplies Zimbabwe and Zambia with about half their electricity needs and the receding water levels have forced each country to implement power cuts lasting as long as 18 hours a day.

The volume of water flowing over Victoria Falls rose to 252 cubic meters per second by Monday. This is slightly better than 234 cubic meters measured this time in 2018.

According to the Lusaka Times, the flows at Victoria Falls are a good indication of how much water is entering Kariba as there aren’t any major tributaries before the Zambezi reaches the dam about 125 kilometres to the east.
