State Accused Of "Buying Time" In Case Of Guvamombe Remanded For Offering Kasukuwere And Mandiwanzira Internship

The state on Monday blocked a release bid by a suspended magistrate, Mishrod Guvamombe who is in remand on criminal abuse of office charges.

Guvamombe is being accused of abusing office after he offered an internship to former cabinet ministers, Saviour Kasukuwere and Supa Mandiwanzira who were both studying law at the University of Zimbabwe at the same time they were facing criminal charges.

Guvamombe’s lawyer, Jonathan Samukange believes that his client has no case to answer. Samukange said:

We were fortunate to go through the documents that the State intends to use against the accused person and there is no case. None of the witnesses are substantiating the criminal abuse of office charge.

There is no prejudice if he is removed from remand. On November 12, the State was given the last remand and when we appeared on December 5, we were told that we would be definitely indicted today, but that is not happening.

Deputy chief magistrate Crispen Mberewere postponed the matter to January 28 pending indictment.

The matter is related to that of former University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor, Levi Nyagura who was suspended after the academic institution offered former first lady, Grace Mugabe a doctorate.

It is essential to note that Nyagura like Guvamombe were dealing with powerful people.
