Security Guard Shoots Self In The Head At Econet Shop

Vendors and ordinary people scampered for cover when a gunshot echoed from an Econet Wireless Shop at the intersection of First Street and George Silundika Avenue around 5 pm on Tuesday.

It was later established that a security guard, from Guard Alert manning the Econet premises, had committed suicide by shooting himself once in the head in a toilet on the first floor. A vendor operating close to the scene is quoted as saying:

We were outside the shop when we heard the sound of the gunshot and we ran for our dear life. We later discovered that a security guard had shot himself inside the toilet that is on the first floor of the shop.

Reports suggest that the security guard, only identified as Nyamadzawo, was questioned by Econet officials over some cellphones that recently went missing, while others claim that he was having financial problems.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi couldn’t shed more light on the incident as details were still sketchy.
