PICTURES: 'Citizweans' Internet Crowdfunded Initiative Provides Health Services To 650 Zimbabweans

An internet crowdfunded initiative called Citizweans Clinic saw 650 patients at its pilot mobile clinic set up in Cowdray Park Bulawayo.

The initiative is in response to the health crisis in the country that has resulted from the unresolved strike by doctors which has seen hundreds of doctors fired by the government. So far, the initiative has raised about $6,000 using the internet crowdfunding platform GoFundMe.

Posting an update yesterday, the leader of the initiative, Freeman Chari said:

The first Pilot Citizwean Clinic operated in Cowdray Bulawayo for 4 days. We had 6 doctors & 3 nurses who rotated thru the days. We saw 650 patients mainly kids & elderly.

Thank you for your help. We are hoping to expand this to other areas just to stand in the gap. We can’t help everybody but those we do we hope we will make a difference in their lives.

Following the Cyclone Idai disaster in early 2019, Chari and other volunteers raised over US $100,000 for the emergency response. The money was used for basic needs for the survivors as well as the reconstruction of some schools that had been destroyed by the cyclone.

Other Zimbabweans who are part of initiative include Wellington Mahohoma and prominent Zimbabwean UK based medical doctor Brighton Chireka.
