'Ignoring Chinese While Naming Streets After Russians Meant To Hurt China'

A political commentator and academic, Alex Magaisa, opines that the renaming of a Harare street, that is, Fife Avenue by Cabinet, after former Soviet Union ruler Leonid Brezhnev is meant to spite the Chinese.

It was during Brezhnev’s reign that the Soviet Union helped the Zimbabwe People’s Liberation Army (ZIPRA) to fight the settler regime in the then Rhodesia.

Morden China’s founding father was Mao Zedong and his country trained and equipped thousands of Zimbabwe National Liberation Army (ZANLA) guerillas, and yet, he did not receive the honour to have a street named after him.

Writing on microblogging site Twitter, Magaisa said:

The Mnangagwa regime has named a Harare street after former Soviet Union ruler Leonid Brezhnev. Under Brezhnev, the Soviets helped ZIPRA during the liberation war.

I wonder how the Chinese will feel. It won’t escape their notice that there is no Mao Avenue. China helped ZANLA.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet also resolved to rename Harare Hospital to Sally Mugabe Hospital, Mutare Hospital to become Victoria Chitepo Hospital.

In a related matter, both Harare’s Enterprise Road and Bulawayo’s 6th Street are to be renamed Emmerson Mnangagwa Road.
