South Africa Police Remove Refugees From UNHCR Compound

South Africa police on Thursday removed refugees from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees offices in Pretoria.

Refugees reportedly went over the office fence on Thursday after a court order was granted, ordering them to vacate the UN office in three days.

They had erected tents and vowed to stay there until they are given a better place to stay after their initial place was prone to violence which broke out in August targeted at foreigners.

SABC News reports that the UNHCR offered to take them back to their home countries or to be joined with the local communities but they rejected the offers saying that they wanted to be taken to Canada.

The UNHCR is reportedly saying that the consent of Canada and or any country where the refugees did not come from would need to be sought first before they are relocated to those countries.
