The Ecumenical Church Leaders Forum (ECLF) has criticised the government and security forces for the alleged wanton violation of the rights of citizens.
The ECLF recently released a statement calling for the authorities to work with all stakeholders for peace and also endorsed a statement by the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD) where it called for an elections sabbath for the next seven years. Part of the ECLF statement reads:
Is it not more than enough that thousands died through the Gukurahundi atrocities? Isn’t constitutionality meant for order, protection and prosperity? What order is it when machete-wielding criminals are harassing communities, injuring and murdering citizens and getting away scot-free?
What order is it and where is the protection of citizens when an arrested individual is assaulted to death by what are supposed to be law enforcement agents.
The group also expressed dismay over the state of the country’s health delivery system which has been worsened by the ongoing doctors’ strike.
ECLF consists of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches, Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference and the Union of the Development of Apostolic Church in Zimbabwe and Africa.
