"ED's Cabinet Reshuffle A Direct Jab At The ZANU And ZAPU Unity Accord"

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s recent Cabinet reshuffle has been described as an attack on the 1987 Unity Accord between PF ZAPU and ZANU.

The removal of Cain Mathema from the Home Affairs ministry marks a clear departure from customs practised since the peace agreement was signed in 1987.

The ministry which Mnangagwa gave to his close ally, Kazembe Kazembe, has often been given to a former ZAPU member until now.

A staunch critic of President Mnangagwa, Ibbo Mandaza, the Southern Africa Political Economy Series executive director, said the Unity Accord no longer mattered to Zanu PF.

Meanwhile, Mathema said that the move was neither against the dictates of the Unity Accord nor was it a violation of the Constitution. He said:

Where was it written in the Unity Accord? Is it written in the constitution? If not, why then talk about it?

The Unity Accord was signed following the Matebeleland crisis known as Gukurahundi which claimed lives of approximately 20000 people from Midlands and Matebeleland.

Reports suggest that the government unleashed the “ruthless” North Korean-trained fifth brigade on civilians who were alleged to be dissidents or at least be supporting them.
