President Emmerson Mnangagwa has vowed to stop whites who are reportedly smuggling Zimbabwe’s mineral resources out of the country.
Addressing delegates to a Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) Annual General Meeting attended mostly by small scale miners in Gweru, Mnangagwa said that he had been ignorant of the matter but now sees the significance of coming up with laws which stop the leakages. He said:
During colonialism, the whites looted our mineral resources. We are now independent, and I am hearing that they are still siphoning out our mineral resources right under our nose.
His remarks are in sync with reports earlier made suggesting that the country’s mineral resources were being smuggled through the country’s porous borders causing the country to lose a lot in revenue.
The late former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, at some point alleged that the country had potentially lost diamonds worth about US$15 billion.
