ED To Launch US$40M Sugarcane Project This Saturday

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to launch a US$40 million Kilimanjaro sugarcane project in Chiredzi this Saturday.

The project which has already started and is expected to be completed by September next year will see Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe opening over 3 000 hectares of virgin land into cane fields.

The project is also premised at increasing sugar production and ultimately more foreign currency.

Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Ezra Chadzamira, said that the project was expected to come with several opportunities for the province. He said:

This is a very important moment for us as a province as we will be witnessing the official launch of a project that will give us more jobs, revenue, and empowerment to the sons and daughters of Zimbabwe.

We are also happy that the President will have an opportunity to tour the winter maize project here which the Masvingo Development Trust and Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe have been doing for the past five or so year.

The development comes when the country’s agriculture is in a bad state for over two decades now resulting in starvation in the country.
