Minister of Transport, Joel Biggie Matiza has said that the rehabilitation of the Beitbridge-Harare road has since commenced after the government resorted to contracting locally based contractors.
He noted that the construction of the road was in fulfilment of the government’s preelection promises.
Matiza’s remarks were echoed by Mr Bigboy Sibindi, a representative of Bitumen World which was contracted for the project who revealed that the works which had been divided into two phases have since commenced. He said:
We have started working on the 20km stretch and are confident that the project will be completed as agreed with our client. We are also going to outsource labour from the communities living along this road.
The rehabilitation of the Beitbridge-Harare Highway has been on the cards for now with the government continuously postponing it citing inadequacy of resources.
The sorry state of the road has resulted in various accidents and eventual deaths of countless motorists and passengers.
