32 Elephant Calves Flown Out Of Zimbabwe - Report

Thirty-two calves were secretly loaded onto a cargo plane reportedly headed for China after being removed from a holding facility at Hwange National Park The Telegraph reports.

According to the source that spoke to the publication, the details of the destination are unknown even though speculation is rife that they are going to Chinese Zoos.

Thirty-two of 37 young elephants were removed from a holding facility in Hwange National Park on Thursday morning and loaded onto a Saudia Cargo jet at Victoria Falls airport in the afternoon, sources close to the transfer said.

The five other elephants were rejected, apparently for health reasons. The Zimbabwe National Society for the Protection of Animals confirmed the reports. A source close to the society said the destination, buyers and condition of the animals were all unknown.

The baby elephants had been the centre of a legal battle ever since a picture of them being held at a facility went viral in February. Activists had reportedly warned the park about transporting the young jumbos before the court case was concluded.
