"Zimbabwe Can Still Sell Live Elephants Despite CITES Ban" - Experts

Experts have said that Zimbabwe can still sell its 35 live elephants to China and Pakistan despite the ban by the UN Convention on International Trade In Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The remarks come when a non-governmental organisation, Advocates4Earth has been demonstrating against the selling of live elephants saying its a violation of animal rights.

Commenting on the CITES notification No.2019/055 issued on October 16, the advisor to Sadc countries on CITES trade regulations, Dr Malan Lindique said:

The 90-day period has not expired yet. The amendment to the resolution is not yet in force. Zimbabwe notified a dispute on the amendment to the resolution. They have all the right in the world to ignore this amendment for the time being.

Lindique’s remarks are in sync with those of Zimbabwe’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Mr Munesu Munodawafa who opined that said that the 90-day CITES rule allowed for “any outstanding contractual obligations to be honoured or negotiated otherwise and the same can be said of Zimbabwe.”

Zimbabwe has been arguing that its wild parks are now overpopulated and has been eager to sell some wild animals to free space.
