"Road Maintenance Funds Hadn't Been Forthcoming From ZINARA This Year" - HCC

Harare City Council has attributed the slow pace at which road maintenance in the capital has been moving to a number of challenges including the inadequacy of financial resources.

The Director of Works revealed that out of 540km targeted for road maintenance, only 10km had been repaired so far due to a number of issues including the soaring inflation. He added:

The other challenge has been that the disbursement of road maintenance funds had not been forthcoming from Zimbabwe National Road Authority (Zinara) this year.

However, we are expecting meaningful progress following the conclusion of the contracts for roads repair and maintenance.

The local government authority has also been struggling to provide basic public goods including potable water, garbage collection and sewer reticulation citing other issues such as the shortage of foreign currency in the country and power cuts.

The local government authority which is run mostly by opposition MDC councillors has reportedly been a political playground with the party alleging that the ruling ZANU PF and or the central government were sabotaging its operations by not availing the requisite resources.

ZANU PF denies the allegations of course.
