Parliament Prematurely Adjourned Over Anti-Sanctions Debate

The National Assembly was prematurely adjourned yesterday over the anti-sanctions debate between Zanu-PF legislators and MDC-Alliance members of Parliament.

ZANU PF MP, Robson Nyathi had moved the motion for the removal of sanctions saying they had brought severe suffering on the general public. Nyathi said:

The Western countries are masking their illegal regime change agenda under the guise of targeted sanctions.

The so-called targeted sanctions have brought untold suffering to ordinary Zimbabweans through de-industrialisation resulting in high levels of unemployment, among many other economic challenges.

The motion was seconded by the legislator for Makonde, Kindness Paradza who thanked SADC for standing in solidarity with Zimbabwe against the sanctions.

Zanu-PF Chief Whip, Pupurai Togarepi suggested that a law be established to punish members of Parliament who beg for the imposition of sanctions. He said that those individuals were not different from terrorists.

The vice president of the opposition MDC, Tendai Biti rose to debate thereby triggering chaos as ZANU PF members objected saying that he was an interested party. Resultantly, the gathering was prematurely adjourned.
