A fire broke out at Tongogara High School on Wednesday afternoon, destroying property worth thousands of dollars.
The incident was confirmed to ZTN News by Acting Midlands Provincial Education Director, Reverend Tedious Mativenga who said:
I can confirm that one of the hostels at Tongogara High School in Shurugwi was gutted down by fire which broke out in the afternoon.
The fire brigade was called immediately and managed to put out the fire. However, the top floor of the double-storey hostel had already been destroyed.
We have sent a team on the ground and the police are also investigating the matter to establish the cause of the fire.
Reports indicate that the fire was caused by students who were allegedly smoking cigarettes in the dormitories.
Some of the students affected were sitting for their Ordinary Level ZIMSEC examinations. They lost their clothes, books and other valuables.
