Bail Application Postponed Again For 11 Men Who Attacked A Police Officer

The bail application for 11 men who allegedly attacked a police officer in Harare has been postponed for the second time after the magistrate, Learnmore Mapiye who has been presiding over the matter did not attend.

Mapiye has been given three-day sick leave prompting Harare provincial magistrate, Vongai Muchuchti Guwuriri, to postpone the case to the 21st of October.

The accused who are suspected to be members of the opposition MDC are said to have attacked the police officer, Tatenda Sibiya, at Chicken Inn, Julius Nyerere Way and Kwame Nkrumah Avenue.

The State alleges that the accused declared, as they attacked Sibiya, that some areas next to Morgan Tsvangirai House formerly Harvest House were no go area for police officers.

The accused are said to have fled to Robinson House where they were later arrested. Robinson House was also in the news this week after over hundred riot police helmets were discovered there.

Lawyers representing the accused argue that their clients were wrongfully arrested as the police arrested anyone and everyone found at the place.

Meanwhile, the state is opposing bail arguing that the gang is facing a serious offence.
