Appeal For $2M To Service Zimbabwe's Only Radiotherapy Machines

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has appealed to the government to avail $2 million Zimbabwe Dollars for servicing eight radiotherapy machines lying idle at Parirenyatwa Hospital and Mpilo Hospitals.

Speaking at a time when the country is commemorating the breast cancer month, Director family health in the ministry of health and childcare, Dr Bernard Madzima said:

We have eight machines at our two centers but all these machines requires two million dollars for them to be serviced for the next five years. This is an urgent appeal as our public hospitals are not able to offer radio therapy.

The call is made when the country’s health sector is in a sorry state as there are inadequate medicines, machines and personnel, particularly in public medical institutions. Patients are being referred to private health institutions whilst cancer patients are normally referred to other countries including India.

The already dire situation was made worse by the industrial action which health workers embarked on since the 3rd of September this year.
