Harare City Council Mulls Legal Action Against Debtors

Harare City Council says that it will name and shame private companies owing $336 million to the local authority.

Council finance director Stanley Ndemera on Friday warned the defaulters that the City Fathers will shame, then and take them to court. He said:

We are owed more than $900 million in total revenue fees and topping the list of debtors are private companies, with $336 million.

Now we are taking a new direction and if they do not pay up, we will first name and shame them, then take the legal route.

Ndemera revealed that the government has already cleared its $22 222 445 debt.

Harare City Council has over the years been failing to provide basic services such as water, street lighting and trash collection to residents due to budgetary constraints blamed on non-payment of bills.
