"The Plight Of Patients Must Spark Govt, Doctors Negotiations" - OPINION

Daily News Editorial titled “Govt must urgently end impasse with doctors” has said that the plight of patients must be spark negotiations between the government and the doctors.

The editor bemoaned the standoff between the employer (government) and the employees (doctors) which has had an adverse impact on the innocent patients.

The editorial mostly blames the government for lack of care to address the doctors “genuine” demands. Part of the article reads:

The plight of patients — who visit national referral health institutions on a daily basis and have to resign themselves to fate after failing to get help — has to be central in formulating the platform for fruitful negotiations.

Government is fully aware of the issues that affect their workforce, including the doctors, as well as the challenges they face given the ever-rising prices of basic commodities and services in the wake of the erosion of value of their salaries and runaway inflation.

These remarks come when doctors have been on strike for 34 days now, as of Sunday 6 October and are not sure as to when they will return to work.

Public Hospitals had to regularly engage members of the Zimbabwe National Army to save the situation.
